After months of research and development, the COVID-19 vaccine is finally being distributed nationwide, and public figures are some of the first to receive the inoculation.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on Thursday that she will be receiving the vaccine in the coming weeks “at the direction of the [Congressional] Attending Physician.”
Government and frontline workers first
Congress’s attending physician reportedly informed Pelosi that she is eligible to receive the brand new vaccine under “government continuity” guidelines.
“With confidence in the vaccine and at the direction of the Attending Physician, I plan to receive the vaccine in the next few days,” Pelosi revealed in a statement.
“Even with a vaccine, I will continue to follow [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guidelines by continuing to wear a mask and take other science-based steps to stop the spread of the virus,” Pelosi continued.
Nancy Pelosi, as House Speaker, is third in the line of succession to the presidency, and thus receives priority in getting the vaccine.
Several other notable government officials will receive the vaccine in short time, including Vice President Mike Pence — who received the vaccine Friday morning — and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — who will receive the vaccine within the week.
Pelosi also called upon Americans “to embrace testing, tracing, treatment, mask wearing and social distancing as the vaccine is being distributed” in her statement.
Pence gets trashed
Mike Pence received the vaccine Friday morning in a televised ceremony, ostensibly to encourage Americans to have confidence in also getting the vaccine.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel took the opportunity to trash Pence’s decision to get the vaccine, citing an op-ed Pence wrote in July pointing out media fearmongering in regard to the virus.
“Speaking of cold, white stuff, Mike Pence is expected to get his first of two Pfizer shots tomorrow,” Jimmy Kimmel said his opening monologue on Thursday. “I guess the thinking is, if it’s good enough for America’s First Karen, it should be good enough for the rest of them too. But this is exciting for Mike Pence. Getting vaccinated is the only time Mother ever does shots with him.”
“So maybe save that dose for someone else,” the left-wing “comedian” said. “The only cure Mike Pence should get right now is a bottle of Clorox and a heat lamp.”
