Come again, Speaker?
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had a gerontocrat moment on Sunday when she described communist China as “one of the freest societies in the world” during a cable news hit, Breitbart reported.
Pelosi says China
Pelosi was being interviewed by NBC Today host Savannah Guthrie about her recent, controversial trip to Taiwan, which China claims as its own.
The Speaker was warmly received in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, during a tour of Asia last week, but the visit angered Beijing, which responded with military drills near Taiwan.
Pelosi insisted the trip was “worth it” despite China’s bellicose reaction and that the visit did nothing to change American policy, which has long acknowledged China’s territorial claims over Taiwan without fully accepting them.
While Pelosi said she was sending a message that America supports democracy, she seemed to get confused when she described China as “one of the freest societies in the world” and a “strong democracy” with “courageous people.”
“There was nothing disruptive about that. It was only about saying China is one of the freest societies in the world,” she said.
Is Pelosi ok?
Pelosi appeared to get mixed up again when she said the president of “Taiwan” is a “bully” before quickly correcting herself.
“And just because … the president of Taiwan is a bully — excuse me — China acts like a bully, has his own insecurities, it doesn’t mean that I’m going to have him do my — the schedule for members of Congress,” she said.
By the end of a rambling response, Pelosi found her footing, saying, “Taiwan is our friend.”
“Members of Congress can show their support for countries and democracies who are our friends. And according to the Taiwan Policy Act, Taiwan is our friend,” she said.
This isn’t the first time that, Pelosi, 82, has shown signs of age. The Democrat has drawn attention for her at times strange and incoherent statements.
