Congressional Republicans, President Donald Trump and left-wing media outlets like CNN and MSNBC have finally found something on which they can agree.
Democrat tactics and partisan demands are to blame for the lack of a stimulus bill to help with the economic damage caused by the coronavirus outbreak, a sentiment echoed by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) during an appearance on Fox & Friends.
“To me, this is the lowest level,” McCarthy said. “The country does not want us to be partisan, they want us to be productive,” he later added.
Democrat tactics slammed
The bill that has been under consideration, which could cost as much as $2 trillion, offers direct stimulus checks to a large number of Americans as well as up to $500 billion in loans and aid to businesses affected by the outbreak.
As Senate Republicans were preparing to vote to advance the bill, Democrats decided to block its progress for a second time, citing concerns that it was too pro-business and didn’t include a series of controversial — and expensive — additions. When a cloture vote failed on Monday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) decided to put forward a bill of her own.
The problem is that Pelosi’s version of the bill included numerous provisions unrelated to coronavirus, such as major changes to voting procedures, a bailout of the U.S. Postal Service, and diversity reporting requirements for corporate boards. Republicans balked at the demands and blasted Democrats on the Senate floor and in the media.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had real emotion in his voice as he lambasted Democrats for backing out of their tacit agreement because of Pelosi’s interference.
According to Fox News, McConnell accused Pelosi of “taking a week off” and then coming back to “pour cold water” on the Senate proposal. “She’s the speaker of the House, not the speaker of the Senate,” McConnell said.
Trump says no to pork
As of Monday night, there was still no deal, and President Trump weighed in with a tweet blaming Pelosi for tanking the bill and saying “Republicans shouldn’t agree” to a liberal wish list that had little connection to the current crisis.
Republicans had a deal until Nancy Pelosi rode into town from her extended vacation. The Democrats want the Virus to win? They are asking for things that have nothing to do with our great workers or companies. They want Open Borders & Green New Deal. Republicans shouldn’t agree!

The Daily Wire noted that even CNN and MSNBC blamed Democrats and Pelosi for the legislative delay.
CNN said Democrats were engaging in ‘political gamesmanship’ with the bill, and MSNBC even conceded that Democrats were adding provisions to the bill “that are arguably not a current crisis.”
Perhaps it is time for Pelosi to pass the leadership baton to someone else if she thinks there is any kind of public support for such nakedly partisan tactics in the midst of a global pandemic.
