Pelosi faces blowback after being spotted sans mask at White House event

Democrats including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) have long preached about following “the science” when it comes to COVID-19 — but in recent weeks, it’s become increasingly clear that they can’t follow that mantra themselves.

According to The Daily Wire, the stunning hypocrisy from the left was evidenced yet again this week when Pelosi was photographed without a face covering while in close proximity to others during a bill signing event at the White House. Literally hours before the signing, the speaker had reportedly chastised a group of Republican House members for refusing to wear masks on the job.

“What is this, the honor system?”

In a press conference responding to criticism from her Republican colleagues who refuse to wear masks in light of the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Pelosi attempted to defend her own rules that still require even fully vaccinated members of Congress to mask up.

“What is this, the honor system? The honor system, as to whether somebody’s been vaccinated? Do you want them breathing in your face on the strength of their honor?” Pelosi said, according to The Daily Wire.

A reporter pressed the speaker on why she and the Capitol physician remain steadfast in their decision to enforce the mask mandates, even though the U.S. Senate and the White House are following the CDC’s lead and dropping mask requirements for fully vaccinated individuals.

“We have a responsibility to make sure that the House of the Representatives’ chamber is not a Petri dish because of the selfishness of some not to be vaccinated or to wear a mask, because it requires us to wear a mask,” Pelosi responded, though just hours later she was seen ignoring her own rules, as reports were quick to note.

More backlash for Pelosi

Pelosi is also facing growing resistance from House Republicans over recently announced fines for members who refuse to abide by the lower chamber’s masking rules. According to Fox News, a number of GOP lawmakers have already been slapped with $500 fines.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), who also happens to be a physician, was one of four House Republicans to be hit with a financial punishment for not following Pelosi’s rules. Now, she’s arguing that forcing fully vaccinated members of Congress to wear masks only serves to confuse the American public.

Miller-Meeks told Fox that she’s a proponent of lifting the mask rules for vaccinated members “so that we could be the leaders we are elected to be, and we could be a show of normalcy and what would happen if you got vaccinated as a motivation for people to get vaccinated.”

In addition to Miller-Meeks, Reps. Brian Mast (R-FL), Beth Van Duyne (R-TX), and Ralph Norman (R-TX) have all been slapped with $500 fines for non-compliance with the masking rules. An additional seven House GOP members were issued warnings. The aforementioned four members who were already fined will face an increased $2,500 fine if they’re cited again, according to reports.

Norman, for his part, told Fox that from his perspective, Democrats typically only don masks when television cameras are rolling, echoing recent accusations by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) that vaccinated Dems who continue to wear masks are doing so for merely theatrical purposes.
