Remember Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), the congressman who pushed non-existent Russian collusion and who was caught in a scandal with a Chinese spy? He’s just been promoted.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced this week that Swalwell will be one of the House’s managers in President Donald Trump’s upcoming impeachment hearing.
This is unbelievable
Pelosi announced the impeachment managers on Tuesday.
Leading the way was Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD). He is joined by Reps. Diana Degette (D-CO), David Cicilline (D-RI), Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Ted Lieu (D-CA), Stacy Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands), Joe Neguse (D-CO), Madeliene Dead (D-PA), and Swalwell.
In her statement, Pelosi called the role of the impeachment managers a “solemn privilege.”
“They will do so guided by their great love of country, determination to protect our democracy, and loyalty to our oath to the Constitution,” Pelosi said. “Our managers will honor their duty to defend democracy for the people with great solemnity, prayerfulness, and urgency.”
The impeachment itself is already being condemned by many Republicans who see it as nothing more than another political sham, just like the first impeachment over the Ukrainian matter. And, naming Swalwell as a manager only serves to confirm this view.
Throughout its duration, Swalwell was one of the Democrats’ top disinformation disseminators for the Trump-Russia collusion theory. He even went so far as to claim, on a number of occasions, that President Trump took orders from Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
In addition, reports recently came out indicating that Swalwell, at one point, had a years-long relationship with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang, also known as Christine Fang. This led to heavy criticism from Republicans in Congress who called for, at the very least, Swalwell to be removed from the House Intelligence Committee. He nonetheless remains on the committee.
Where is the accountability?
For many, Swalwell’s promotion of the false Russian collusion narrative would be enough to disqualify him from being an impeachment manager. Add to this his relationship with Fang, and the case against Swalwell being an impeachment manager only gets stronger.
Instead, however, Pelosi has chosen to reward Swalwell. Before one gets too upset about this, though, consider what one GOP lawmaker told the Examiner: “A member of the Intelligence Committee who slept with and took money from a Chinese spy is trying to convince people that someone else is unfit for office. He’s a perfect leader for this entire farce.”
Indeed, he is.
