Pelosi to soon announce whether she’ll form a committee to investigate Jan. 6

CNN reported Tuesday evening that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will announce whether she will create a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 events at the U.S. Capitol.

Conflicting reports circulated Tuesday evening, with many outlets reporting Pelosi had already made the decision. She later added a clarification that the decision has yet to be made.

A Committee Despite Senate Rejection

The report follows last month’s Senate rejection of a bill that would have formed a 9/11-style committee to investigate the events at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Republicans largely rejected the measure, arguing several investigations were already underway, as well as noting any commission should investigate riots beyond Jan. 6 that included BLM protests in 2020.

Pelosi and House Democrats have already made a significant response to the events of Jan. 6. Despite leaving office, Democrats voted to impeach Trump in the House, with the Senate failing to pass the impeachment measure.

A series of various investigation have also taken place. Many Americans who entered the U.S. Capitol have been charged, with others continuing under legal investigation.

What Will Happen Next?

CNN’s Anderson Cooper later reported on air despite updates to Pelosi’s report that, ”

“CNN has learned from two sources familiar with the subject that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to appoint a select committee to investigate the January insurrection. They tell us she said so this evening to Democrats on the chamber’s Steering and Policy Committee.

“One source [was] telling us the speaker indicated she believes a regular standing committee of several dozen members just would not work, and notes the House has already given the Senate several weeks to get a bill on an independent commission, something Republicans have blocked.

“Speaker Pelosi later denied that she had made a decision. CNN stands by its reporting and the sources who confirmed her initial reports.”

Whether Pelosi chooses to move forward with a committee or not will be an important matter for Americans. This will be especially true as the nation nears the 2022 midterm election season, with Democrats using the events of Jan. 6 to further “blame and shame” conservatives.
