GOP senator accused of racism after mispronouncing Kamala

Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) caught serious heat from the media after he mispronounced Sen. Kamala Harris’s first name while speaking at a rally in Georgia ahead of President Donald Trump.

Many left-leaning media figures immediately assumed that Perdue’s mispronunciation of the senator’s name was the product of bigotry and racism. However, Fox News noted that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden drew no such criticism when he also mispronounced her name recently.

“Kamala-mala-mala”

During a Trump rally in Macon, Georgia, on Friday, Perdue warmed up the crowd ahead of the president’s arrival by speaking about the importance of preventing the Democrats from gaining control of the Senate.

“The most insidious thing that Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden are trying to perpetuate, and Bernie [Sanders] and Elizabeth [Warren] and Kamala — Kah-ma-la, or Kah-mah-la, or Kamala-mala-mala — I don’t know, whatever,” Perdue said, to hearty laughs from the audience, according to USA Today.

Kamala Harris’s press secretary denounced it as “incredibly racist.”

Perdue’s comment was condemned as “gross” by Miryam Lipper, the communications director for Democratic Senate candidate Jon Ossoff, Perdue’s challenger in the upcoming election.

Fox noted that a host of left-leaning media figures also piled on to denounce Perdue for messing up Harris’ name. Many insinuated that racism was a motivating factor behind the mispronunciation, given the fact that the two have worked together in the Senate, particularly the Budget Committee, for the past three years.

Similarly, USA Today also shared statements about the incident by a variety of Democratic Party figures who, again, attributed the remarks from Perdue to racism, pure and simple.

Biden made the same mistake

For what it is worth, the communications director for Perdue’s re-election campaign, John Burke, said in a tweet that the senator “simply mispronounced” Harris’ name and “didn’t mean anything by it. He was making an argument against the radical socialist agenda that she and her endorsed candidate Jon Ossoff are pushing, which includes the Green New Deal, Medicare-for-all, raising taxes, and holding up COVID relief for the people of Georgia.”

Meanwhile, Fox pointed out that, on the very same day that Perdue was dogpiled for mispronouncing Harris’ name, her own running mate Joe Biden mispronounced it as well — as he has done on several occasions in the past — without there even being a peep from the same folks accusing Perdue of racism and bigotry.
