Philadelphia first US city to reimpose indoor mask mandates due to BA.2 variant

Just when the country was starting to show signs of returning to normalcy, Democratic leaders in the city of Philadelphia seemingly couldn’t resist reimposing a new round of pandemic-related mandates.

According to Fox News, as of April 18, health department officials in the “City of Brotherly Love” say that the city will return to indoor mask mandates, citing a rise in cases of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.

Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole said at a press briefing on Monday afternoon that she and her colleagues are seeing a rise in BA.2 cases in Europe and in Philly, which prompted them to recommend returning to mask mandates.

The Philadelphia Public Health Department even urged residents of the city to report businesses that don’t comply with the mask mandate.

Defying the CDC

Philadelphia’s decision to return to the mandates is purely political in the eyes of many, as the Dems who run the city presumably missed having the level of control that they had during the pandemic.

Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend against the mask mandate in areas of low transmission risk, like Philly, and leave it to one’s personal preferences on whether or not to mask up, a compromise that most people can live with.

Making matter worse for Philly residents, if the numbers continue to rise to the next “tier,” the city will then bring back vaccine passport guidelines, requiring residents to show proof of vaccination to enter bars, restaurants, gyms, and other venues.

“Our city remains open; we can still go about our daily lives and visit the people and places we love while masking in indoor public spaces,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted on Monday as he faced intense backlash on social media for the returned masking rule.

Contradicting Biden

Not long ago, even President Joe Biden declared an end to mask mandates as COVID cases plummeted around the country, likely due in part to the vast amount of natural immunity that the Omicron variant provided the population, though Dems will never admit to that.

“Most Americans in most of the country can now be mask free. And based on the projections, more of the country will reach that point across the next couple of weeks,” Biden said last month. “Thanks to the progress we have made this past year, COVID-19 need no longer control our lives.”

Well, that is, unless you live in Philidelphia. What a sad state of affairs.
