President Joe Biden has long been adamant about Americans wearing masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. But as a newly published photo shows, one of the top members of Biden’s administration seems to think the rules don’t apply to him.
The Washington Examiner reported this week that U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry was caught without a mask on during a commercial flight.
According to the Tennessee Star, which first published a photo of the incident, Kerry was not eating or drinking at the time the picture was taken, as would have been allowed. Instead, the so-called “climate czar” was casually reading in the first-class section of an American Airlines flight headed to Washington, D.C.

Masks on planes
Kerry’s conduct reportedly runs afoul of an order issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Jan. 29 that made face masks mandatory for all airline travelers, as well as those on other means of transportation.
“People must wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose when awaiting, boarding, traveling on, or disembarking public conveyances,” the order said, according to the Washington Examiner.
“People must also wear masks when entering or on the premises of a transportation hub in the United States,” it added.
According to the Examiner, neither Kerry nor American Airlines has commented on the matter.
A federal mandate
Previously, the airline had vowed to follow the CDC’s new mask order.
“Our mask requirement has been and will continue to be a critical component of our comprehensive effort to protect the health and well-being of our customers and team members during the pandemic,” one company executive said, according to the Examiner. “This federal mandate will provide additional support to our crew members who are working diligently to enforce our policy and further reinforce the safety of air travel during COVID-19.”
Of course, Kerry is not the only prominent Democrat to make headlines for flouting coronavirus-related restrictions. Late last year, Fox News published photos of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) attending a crowded dinner party without a mask.
Fox reported separately that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had visited a San Francisco hair salon in September 2020 in defiance of local COVID-19 ordinances. The “rules for thee, but not for me” attitude is clearly alive and well on the left.
