Photos show destruction in Borodyanka following Russian retreat

Breitbart reported on Sunday that Russian troops have retreated from the Ukrainian city of Borodyanka after occupying it for weeks.

Yet, although the invading forces have gone away, the scenes of destruction that they inflicted still remain.

Photos show bleak scenes

According to Breitbart, Borodyanka had 12,000 residents before Russian soldiers occupied it on their way to Kyiv, located 75 kilometers to the southeast.

However, many of those inhabitants have since fled or died, including some members of 77-year-old Maria Vaselenko’s family.

She was quoted as telling the Associated Press that her two teenage grandchildren made it to Poland, but explained their parents were killed over a month ago. What’s more, Vaselenko complained that the invaders had prevented friends and family members from searching for their missing loved ones.

“The Russians were shooting,” she recalled. “And some people wanted to come and help, but they were shooting them. They were putting explosives under dead people.”

Breitbart carried photos from Borodianka showing destroyed buildings as well as rescue personnel retrieving a body from a pile of rubble.

Journal entry said to have been written by a girl to her dead mother

Meanwhile, Fox News reported that a photo of a journal entry said to have been written by a 9-year-old girl from Borodyanka has been making the rounds on Twitter.

The image was shared by Anton Gerashchenko, who serves as an advisor to Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs. He alleged that it was addressed to the girl’s deceased mother.

Fox News stressed that it could not independently verify the journal’s authenticity. However, the network spoke about it with former Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Rebekah Koffler.

Koffler, who is fluent in Russian, said that the first word “Mama” is printed while the rest of the journal entry is written in neat cursive. Still, she pointed out that the entry also contains several mistakes which could be consistent with it having been written by a child.
