Washington football player Deshazor Everett involved in car crash that killed passenger

A car crash involving a National Football League (NFL) player has left one person dead, Fox News reports

The player, Deshazor Everett, is a defensive back who plays for the Washington Football Team.

The accident marks yet another public relations disaster for the professional football league, specifically in the realm of tragic vehicle accidents that have resulted in fatalities.

What happened?

Information on the fatal accident was released by the sheriff’s office in Loudon County, Virginia, where the car crash took place, according to the New York Post.

The incident took place around 9:15 pm on Thursday. The 29-year-old Everett was driving a 2010 Nissan GT-R, with Olivia S. Peters, a 29-year-old resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the passenger seat.

At one point, according to the sheriff’s report, Everett’s car left the roadway, struck several trees, and then rolled over.

Everett suffered some injuries which have been described as serious but not life-threatening. It was a different story, however, for Peters. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The aftermath

At this point, the crash is still under investigation, and it’s not yet clear why it is that Everett drove his vehicle off of the roadway.

Some have suggested that substance abuse may be to blame, however, the authorities have yet to confirm or rule out those suspicious. It also has yet to be reported at what speed Everett was driving at the time of the crash.

The Washington Football team released a statement on the tragic development. “We’ve been made aware of an automobile accident last night involving Deshazor Everett,” the statement read. “A passenger in his vehicle lost their life and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who lost a loved one.”

The statement continued:

Deshazor is currently in the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected by this tragedy. Our team has alerted the league office and is working with local authorities as we continue to gather more information. We will have no further comment at this time.

Everett has been with the Washington Football Team for seven seasons, which spans his entire career.
