President Joe Biden’s approval rating is slipping as his chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan receives overwhelmingly negative coverage from his usually friendly media allies.
A shocking poll from the mainstream news outlet CBS found that a majority of Americans believe Biden is incompetent. The results come as thousands of Americans have been left stranded at the mercy of the Taliban.
Americans aren’t happy
While most Americans are still happy to be leaving the “graveyard of empires,” they disapprove of the humiliating withdrawal that has left the world watching in horror, according to CBS’s survey.
Sixty-three percent of those polled said they approve of America leaving Afghanistan, but 70% said the removal of U.S. troops was handled poorly, and 44% said that the Afghanistan exit has been going very badly.
This sentiment crosses partisan lines, with 62% of Democrats, 76% of independents, and 87% of Republicans saying the withdrawal has fared badly.
According to the poll, taken from Aug. 18 to Aug. 20, Biden’s net approval rating has slipped with voters evenly divided between approval and disapproval.
Americans are also less likely to say Biden is competent than before, with 49% describing him as competent, a notable development as Biden has sought to contrast himself with Donald Trump using a hackneyed “America is back” theme.
Biden makes a gamble
Another 67% of respondents told CBS that they believe Biden does not have a clear plan to evacuate all U.S. civilians from Afghanistan, despite Biden’s lukewarm promises to get all Americans home.
With thousands of Americans still stranded, the Taliban have threatened “consequences” if all American troops are not out of the country by Biden’s Aug. 31 deadline. The group has reportedly beaten Americans and is said to be seizing U.S. passports, according to the New York Post.
Even the ordinarily sycophantic media have been relentlessly critical of Biden over the frantic evacuation from Kabul. When a CBS reporter confronted Biden about the dismal poll at a news conference Sunday, Biden said he hadn’t seen it, according to Breitbart. Separately, an NBC poll found Biden’s approval sagging to 49%.
Biden has stood by his decision to leave Afghanistan, a “forever war” that has long been unpopular with the public, saying the rapid collapse there is proof that America’s “nation-building” was not successful.
The White House is hoping that Americans will soon forget about the chaos in Kabul and ultimately credit Biden with ending the war. But with numbers like these, I wouldn’t be holding my breath on that.
