A new Washington Post/ABC poll shows that a majority of Americans are not in favor of President Joe Biden’s border policies — in fact, only about a third approve of them.
According to Breitbart, 51% of respondents to the poll said they disapprove of Biden’s handling of “the immigration situation at the U.S.–Mexico border.”
Only 33% — or 1 in 3 — approved of the policies.
Reversing Trump’s policies
Since taking office in January, Biden has reversed a number of former President Donald Trump’s policies on the border, many of which actively discouraged illegal immigration, including by not allowing migrants to remain in the U.S. after being apprehended.
Biden’s methods have involved apprehending migrants at the border, briefly detaining them, and then releasing them into the U.S., where they may disappear and fail to return for their immigration hearings, as Breitbart notes.
The president has also promised to bring deported migrants back to the United States.
“Flow of people”
Unfortunately for Biden and his cohorts, it doesn’t seem Americans are in favor of these moves.
As Breitbart notes, the Post/ABC poll is the second recent survey to indicate that Americans don’t like Biden’s border policies. In a Harvard/Harris Poll released at the end of June, two-thirds of respondents said that the U.S. should reinstate Trump’s policies on immigration, especially the Remain In Mexico policy that kept immigrants from being released into the U.S.
In that poll, 64% also said that Biden needs to “issue new, stricter policies to reduce the flow of people across the border,” as Breitbart reported.
Biden’s “greatest weakness”
According to The Hill, pollster Mark Penn saw the result as a clear sign that something needs to change in Washington. “The voters see the border as a growing problem and blame the Biden administration policies. The voters vastly underestimate the size of the problem and so once they learn it’s nearly 200,000 a month making illegal crossing their temperatures rise on this issue,” Penn said. “This is the administration’s greatest weakness right now.”
It’s a sentiment that’s been echoed by former President Trump himself. “We did a hell of a job and we had it down to really a science. It was down to a point where people just weren’t getting in unless they came in legally,” he said of the border in Texas last week, according to the New York Post.
“We built a wall that was not penetrable and we were just about finished,” Trump added. “If [Biden] would have just done nothing, we would have now the strongest border we’ve ever had.”
