A new poll shows that the percentage of Californians who want to see Governor Gavin Newsom (D) recalled next month has risen to 51%, with 40% saying they do not want Newsom recalled.
Survey USA for the San Diego Union Tribune conducted the poll from August 2 to 4, and it showed a significant shift from an earlier poll by the same group in May in which only 36% of voters said they wanted to recall Newsom and 47% opposed the effort.
The recall effort gained steam after Newsom attended a lobbyist’s birthday party indoors at the French Laundry when indoor dining was banned by Newsom in the state.
Newsom tried to claim that the party was held outdoors in an area with large sliding doors, but photos showed that the doors were closed during the party, making it an indoor event.
Voters angered by Newsom hypocrisy
The incident drew huge attention nationwide as an example of COVID hypocrisy and an attitude by leaders of “do what I say, not what I do.” Voters were angered and by March 2021, more than 2 million signatures were submitted for the recall.
Verification showed that more than 1.7 million signatures were valid, which well exceeded the 1.49 million needed for the recall to move forward.
Other polling since March has shown that while Republican voters, a minority in the state, are highly energized to recall Newsom, Democrat voters are not similarly energized to keep him.
A number of candidates have come forward to run against Newsom should a recall succeed, and current top pollers include YouTuber Kevin Paffrath (D) at 27% and conservative radio host Larry Elder (R) at 23%.
Is new COVID surge hurting Newsom?
California is experiencing a new surge in virus cases as a result of the delta variant, which is much more transmissible than the original strain.
Newsom has tried to be more hands-off about COVID restrictions since he finally lifted all restrictions on June 12. He has talked about reimposing restrictions due to the surge, but has not done so. Some local leaders such as in Los Angeles have reimposed mask mandates to try to stop the spread.
Still, any significant increase in cases has tended to hurt the incumbent leader pretty much no matter what they do (or don’t do) about it.
Do you really think Joe Biden would be president right now if the Democrats had not been able to use the pandemic as a club to beat former President Donald Trump with even though he tried to preserve freedom and got us vaccines in under a year?
So good luck Gavin Newsom; seems like you’re going to need it.
