Despite campaigning last year as a moderate, President Joe Biden has made the hopeful passage of a sprawling $3.5 trillion spending package — a Democrat’s wish-list — a key part of his agenda.
Yet, while many on the left may be enthusiastic about the potential passage of the massive spending bill, according to Breitbart, a new Rasmussen poll released on Monday shows that most Americans are far from it.
Carried out by Rasmussen between Sept. 23 and Sept. 26, the survey of likely voters found that only 36% said they favored passing the multi-trillion-dollar bill.
The figure includes 23% who indicated that they “strongly” support the legislation. In contrast, 53% of likely voters expressed opposition, including 41% who said they were “strongly” opposed.
While those findings should be sobering for the Biden administration and its Democratic allies, there’s more data that should give Democrats cause for concern. As Breitbart noted, the poll also touched on COVID-19 and its political ramifications.
Participants were presented with the following statement: “The radical left … want to use this terrible but temporary pandemic as a Trojan horse for permanent socialism. And President Biden, who ran as a unifying moderate, is either powerless to stop them or does not wish to.”
According to Breitbart, 59% of likely voters expressed agreement with that assessment, including 41% who say they agreed strongly.
As might be expected, a belief that COVID-19 is being used for political purposes was most commonly expressed among supporters of the GOP.
Yet, perhaps surprisingly to many, Democrats appear to be evenly split on the suggestion, with the number of those who said they agreed and disagreed both coming in at 46%.
Biden’s polls sinking
The Rasmussen poll is far from the only recent survey to report bad news for Biden and his administration. A recent Quinnipiac poll reported that 61% of Texans regard the president’s performance unfavorably, likely due, in part, to Biden’s humiliating failure to control the immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border.
In a series of tweets, conservative media strategist Giancarlo Sopo pointed out that Biden is struggling among constituencies that have traditionally voted for Democrats.
The poll found that 55% of Hispanics and 30% of African Americans disapprove of Biden’s performance, leading Sopo to sarcastically remark, “Keep calling us ‘Latinx,’ guys. It’s really working!”
