The radical left’s anti-American narrative has not succeeded in making inroads with the silent majority.
Some 63% of Americans still love the Founding Fathers, according to a new Fox News poll, despite the best efforts of progressives to instill widespread hatred of the country’s heroes.
Americans don’t want Founders “canceled”
Although it might seem that much of the country has turned against them lately, the Founders are still cherished by a majority of Americans — including President Donald Trump, who has aggressively denounced “cancel culture” in his recent rhetoric.
Some 15% of respondents to the Fox News poll said that America’s founders were villains — a comparatively low (but still unsettling) number, while another 15% said “depends,” and some 7% were unsure.
The poll was taken between July 12 and July 15, days after President Trump issued a forceful defense of American heritage in front of Mount Rushmore on the eve of July 4. Trump’s speech came as anti-racism activists destroyed statues of not just Confederates but also of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other giants of the nation’s past.
“Against every law of society and nature, our children are taught in school to hate their own country, and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes, but that were villains,” Trump said on July 3, according to a White House transcript.
A majority in Fox’s survey said that monuments to historical figures, Confederate and otherwise, should remain in place. A full 73% of respondents said that statues of Washington and Jefferson should remain, compared with 16% who said it’s time to tear them down.
Opinions begin to shift
However, sympathy for Confederate monuments has dropped dramatically, with 48% of poll participants saying they should be kept in place versus 39% calling for their removal, compared with 2017, when voters favored keeping them by a 32-point margin, according to Fox.
While some may welcome that shift, others might see signs of a “slippery slope” that has already crossed over into an attack on America itself.
Viewed another way, the Fox News poll shows that some 40% of Americans believe that the Founders are evil, or they aren’t sure, hardly an inspiring result. Roughly a third of respondents under age 30 said that the Founders are villains, not heroes. There is also a racial gap at play, with 39% of Black respondents calling the Founders villains, compared with just 9% of white respondents.
The poll also showed a shift in favor of kneeling protests, with 48% saying that taking a knee during the national anthem is an appropriate form of protest, a nearly 20-point increase since September of 2016, when 61% disapproved.
While Americans clearly still love the Founders, it does appear that the days when they were unanimously revered are already gone.
