Poll: substantial percentage of Democrats worried about Biden’s cognitive health

While they aren’t giving up on him just yet, even Democrats are beginning to have doubts about President Biden’s fitness.

A recent I&I/TIPP Poll found that 39 percent of Democrats are worried about Biden’s mental health, the New York Post reported.

Poll: large number of Dems worried about Biden

The same survey found that a clear majority of Americans, 59 percent, are “concerned” with Biden, with 36 percent saying they were “very” concerned.

82 percent of Republicans and 56 percent of independents said they are worried about Biden’s mental condition. The finding carried across virtually every group polled, except Democrats.

58 percent of Democrats said they were not concerned with Biden’s health, but a substantial percentage, 39 percent, said they did have concerns.

“The fact is, based on these polling data, there is genuine concern among virtually all groups over Biden’s cognitive health,” wrote Terry Jones, editor of Issues & Insights.

“It has taken on political urgency with the looming 2022 midterm elections, which, if Republicans prevail, could well turn Biden into a lame duck,” Jones added.

Biden’s sad decline

It’s not surprising that Americans are asking questions about Biden, who can’t seem to go a week — a day, even — without drawing attention for his bizarre, disconcerting behavior.

He has made some jaw-dropping “gaffes,” such as commenting on “the honor of the Holocaust.” His aides have a habit of retracting the things he says, raising questions about who is really in charge. He is known to shake hands with people who aren’t there. He looks just plain tired much of the time.

The president’s feeble condition has done little to inspire confidence in a moment of economic and geopolitical crisis, and it shows in his sinking approval numbers.

While Democrats as a whole aren’t quite convinced Biden is losing his marbles (what would it take?), the party’s base is ready to back someone else in 2024.

If Biden has one thing going for him, it’s that Democrats have few if any clear alternatives. His direct successor, Kamala Harris, is even more unpopular than him.
