Poll suggests Biden’s student loan handout is backfiring

President Joe Biden’s student loan handout may just be backfiring.

According to Breitbart News, a new poll shows that a majority of New Hampshire independents oppose Biden’s student loan handout — and, we all know how important independents are in elections.

The poll

The University of New Hampshire Survey Center conducted the poll between Aug. 15 and 29. Some 1,993 Granite State Panel members participated.

One of the big findings of the poll is that 59% of those surveyed independent voters oppose Biden’s student loan handout. That’s compared to only 33% who support it.

Otherwise, the poll went along party lines. 86% of Democrats, for example, said that they support Biden’s student loan handout, whereas only 5% of Republicans said the same. On the other hand, 88% of Republicans but only 8% of Democrats oppose it.

Overall, putting party affiliation off to the side, 49% of participants – a plurality – said that do not support Biden’s student loan handout. 44%, on the other hand, did say that they support it.

Of the remaining participants, 5% said that they are neutral about Biden’s student loan handout, and 1% said that they were either unsure or did not know whether they support it.

Biden recently made two big announcements concerning federal student loans. One is that the moratorium on federal student loan payments will continue. The other is the federal student loan handout, referred to above.

Using nothing more than executive action, Biden has announced that he will be canceling up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt – or up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. All that a borrower will have to do to be eligible for this loan forgiveness is show that he or she is making less than $125,000 per year – or, if the individual is married, that the household is making less than $250,000 per year.

Biden has received a tremendous amount of criticism for the plan, and, somewhat surprisingly, a fair share of that criticism has come from the political left.

The Washington Post, for example, has published several articles condemning Biden’s student loan handout for a myriad of reasons.

Biden, here, is making a gamble, that the student loan handout would earn himself and his fellow Democrats more votes than it would take away. We’ll have to see how it plays out. But, there are certainly signs that it might just end up backfiring.
