Polls finds Americans have cut back on watching superhero movies

A new poll from Morning Consult has found that “superhero film fatigue is up,” by which the pollster means that American enthusiasm for superhero films is waning.

This corresponds with what the Wall Street Journal recently referred to as a “box-office slump” for Marvel Studios. The outlet focused on the failure of many recent superhero films to reach its box office expectations.

The big question is: “Why?”

The findings

The pollster conducted the poll between July 30 and 31 of this year, sampling some 2,200 U.S. adults. Then, the pollster compared the results from a similar poll taken last November.

During this time period, the pollster found that adults who say that they enjoy superhero movies have fallen from 64% to 59%. The pollster also found that adults who say that they do not enjoy superhero films has increased from 36% to 41%, which is a 9-point increase from a similar poll taken in 2018.

In addition to this, the pollster found that 82% of Marvel fans still enjoy superhero movies, which is a five percentage point dropoff from December. The pollster also found that, of this 82%, 31% indicated that they are “getting a little tired of so many” superhero movies.

One of the only positives for the superhero movie industry found by the pollster is that “the share of Gen Z adults who said they enjoy watching superhero movies and will continue to watch them in theaters increased from 47% in November to 53% in July.”

The correspondent percentage for millennials, baby boomers, and Gen Xers, though, has fallen.

The “why?”

A question like this always requires a complex answer because there is often more than one cause. Some of those who participated in the poll already stated one cause, namely, a superabundance of superhero films.

Disney, on the other hand, isn’t necessarily buying the “superhero fatigue” explanation. It has been suggested that the coronavirus pandemic has played a large role in the lack of success at the box office of recent superhero films.

Still, there could be yet another factor at play, as suggested by Breitbart News, which is the fact that each new superhero seems to be “more woke than the last.”

Add to this the fact that many actors who participate in these films have publicly been advocating for the leftist agenda, and you end up with a recipe for failure.
