Outgoing Secretary of State Michael Pompeo is trying to make it politically difficult for Joe Biden’s incoming administration to appease Iran, as it plans to do.
The Hill reports that Pompeo recently warned Americans that Iran, because of its connection to al Qaeda, poses a “grave threat” to the safety of our country.
There’s no doubt about that
The secretary of state’s warning came during a speech that he gave at the National Press Club on Tuesday. In it, Pompeo explained the connection between Iran and al Qaeda.
“Since 2015, Iran has also given al Qaeda leaders greater freedom of movement inside of Iran under their supervision,” Pompeo said.
Al Qaeda, of course, is the group that was behind the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. It has since been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.
“As a result of this assistance, al Qaeda has centralized its leadership inside of Iran,” Pompeo continued. “Ayman al-Zawahiri’s deputies are there today, and frankly, they’re living a normal al Qaeda life.”
What to do about it?
Pompeo said in his speech that we need to “acknowledge . . . confront . . . [and] defeat” the “Iran-al Qaeda axis.”
“The time is now for America and all free nations to crush the Iran-al Qaeda axis,” Pompeo said.
Pompeo believes that, here, the administration of President Donald Trump had made progress by ditching former president Barrack Obama’s Iran deal for a “maximum pressure” campaign that has sought to cripple Iran financially.
“Thanks to our sanctions, Iran’s proposed military budget is down 24% this year,” Pompeo tweeted on Tuesday. “We’ve targeted more than 1,500 individuals and entities, depriving the regime of $70 billion that would’ve been used to fund terrorism, ballistic missiles, and nuclear programs.”
The wrong approach to Iran
This would be easing the economic sanctions and rejoining the Iran Deal, which is exactly what Biden plans on doing. It is no coincidence that Iran has recently assumed a more hostile posture and is looking forward to Biden’s administration. According to Pompeo, besides making Iran more dangerous, this move would give “al Qaeda a second wind.”
It is crucial that Biden gets this one right.
