Pres. Biden imposes new travel restrictions amid concerns about a new coronavirus variant

Breitbart reports that President Joe Biden has decided to restrict travel from eight African countries due to concerns about a new variant of the coronavirus.

Remember when Biden accused former President Donald Trump of being “xenophobic” for the ban that he implemented on travel from China and other countries towards the beginning of the coronavirus? Let me jog your memory:

We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus. We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.

Or, maybe you remember this tweet from Biden:

A wall will not stop the coronavirus. Banning all travel from Europe — or any other part of the world — will not stop it. This disease could impact every nation and any person on the planet — and we need a plan to combat it.

Oh, the hypocrisy.

The latest

Biden’s new ban will restrict travel from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Malawi, and South Africa.

The restriction applies to non-U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are still allowed to travel from these countries, but they will be forced to provide a negative coronavirus test.

Here, the Biden administration is following the lead of several other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union, that have already imposed similar restrictions.

The Biden administration’s new travel ban will go into effect on Monday, November 29th.

“A precautionary measure”

Biden explained in a statement that his decision to impose the travel ban was based, in part, on the World Health Organization (WHO) recently naming a new coronavirus variant, the Omicron variant, as a “variant of concern.”

“This morning I was briefed by my chief medical advisor, Dr. Tony Fauci, and the members of our COVID response team, about the Omicron variant, which is spreading through Southern Africa,” Biden said. “As a precautionary measure, until we have more information, I am ordering additional air travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries.”

Biden added, “as we move forward, we will continue to be guided by what the science and my medical team advises.”

Biden, though, has yet to address how his travel ban isn’t “xenophobic,” while Trump’s was. Can’t wait for that explanation.
