For years, Democrats have clung obsessively to hopes of seeing former President Donald Trump locked up in a jail cell for one imaginary crime or another.
The never-ending witch hunt is continuing apace in Georgia, where a partisan prosecutor targeting Trump received permission to impanel a special grand jury for a criminal probe, Fox News reports.
Grand jury coming
District attorney Fani Willis, of solidly Democratic Fulton County, is investigating Trump’s alleged effort to “overturn” the 2020 election with claims of voter fraud. Willis will decide whether to charge Trump before the first half of 2022 is over, just in time for the midterms.
Christopher S. Brasher, the chief judge of Fulton County Superior Court, granted Willis’s request for a special grand jury with the power to issue subpoenas. The grand jury will begin meeting on May 2, and cannot exceed more than a year.
“The special purpose grand jury shall be authorized to investigate any and all facts and circumstances relating directly or indirectly to alleged violations of the laws of the State of Georgia,” Brasher wrote.
Willis had complained that some witnesses were not cooperating with her probe. One of them is Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R), much maligned by Trump as a “RINO” for failing to support Trump’s election challenge.
Democrats have highlighted a phone call between Trump and Raffensperger, in which Trump implored Raffensperger to “find” votes.
Dems getting desperate
President Joe Biden ended up narrowly carrying Georgia and went on to the White House after a massive profusion of mail-in ballots tilted the race in his favor. Trump has maintained ever since that the contest was rigged.
Suspicions of fraud have lingered with the wider public as well, with a recent poll finding that barely half of voters believe Biden won the race legitimately.
Trump, who was impeached twice after spending much of his presidency embattled by bogus claims that he was a Russian agent, has been overtaking Biden in the polls and remains the clear favorite of Republican voters, The Hill noted, despite a relentless effort by the establishment to banish him from the political arena.
In New York, unabashed anti-Trump “#Resistance” fighter Attorney General Letitia James (D) has subpoenaed Trump and his adult children as part of a years-long fishing expedition targeting Trump’s business, as Democrats in Congress carry on a show trial posing as a non-partisan inquiry into the so-called Capitol “insurrection.”
Democrats are clearly not satisfied that Trump no longer poses a threat to their control of the country, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to change that — even if it means turning a former American president into a political prisoner. They might want to think twice about what that would do to the country.
