A Capitol protester who said on Jan. 6 that she wanted to shoot House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has pleaded guilty to trespassing at the Capitol, The Hill reported Wednesday, but a notoriously biased anti-Trump judge thinks she got off easy.
Dawn Bancroft allegedly entered the Capitol through a broken window and left after being inside for less than a minute, according to Buzzfeed News. She pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, but Judge Emmet Sullivan says she should get slapped with a felony.
Woman pleads guilty
As Bancroft was leaving Capitol Hill, she filmed a video of herself saying, “We broke into the Capitol. … We got inside. We did our part.” She also said, “We were looking for Nancy to shoot her in the friggin’ brain, but we didn’t find her.”
She could serve six months in jail after her guilty plea, Buzzfeed notes, but Sullivan, the notoriously biased judge from the Michael Flynn case, thinks Bancroft should be charged with a felony for her “outrageous statement.”
Sullivan continued to evince a powerful political prejudice against former President Donald Trump and his supporters when he said that Bancroft’s remarks show how ordinary people became “terrorists” on Jan. 6.
The judge also said of former President George W. Bush, who compared the Jan. 6 protesters to the al-Qaida hijackers behind the 9/11 attacks, “I agree with him.” A little biased, maybe?
Bancroft has not been accused of committing any violence, nor is there any evidence she had a serious intention to do so. She was in the Capitol for all of one minute and did not post her comments about Pelosi online. But according to Sullivan, her actions are comparable to those of al-Qaida.
“A dumb, stupid comment”
The narrative that Jan. 6 protesters are “terrorists,” despite the fact that none have been charged with terrorism or insurrection (and no evidence has emerged of a plot), has been used to deny basic civil rights to defendants involved in the riot, some of whom have reportedly been beaten in pre-trial detention.
Incredibly, Sullivan is more zealous about the case than even Biden’s openly partisan Justice Department. Prosecutors said they could not justify charging Bancroft for threatening statements because she was leaving the scene and there was no sign she meant it as a serious threat. She was also unarmed, as Buzzfeed notes.
“It was a dumb, stupid comment,” Bancroft told the judge, according to The Washington Post. “I did not mean it.” Still, Bancroft says she regrets her actions and is taking responsibility. According to The Hill, she pleaded guilty to parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, a misdemeanor.
Sullivan warned that Bancroft’s comments could still influence her sentencing in January.
The former CrossFit gym owner has already lost her livelihood and, like other Jan. 6 defendants accused of trespassing, will suffer the social penalties of being wantonly branded a “terrorist” by capricious, partisan judges.
