Protesters surround, harass black cop in widely shared video: Report

A widely shared video depicts a group of predominantly white protesters surrounding and attacking a black police officer during a demonstration in Austin, Texas — and some have alleged those attackers may have ties to Antifa, the Washington Examiner reports.

Protests popped up around the nation late last month after George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died at the hands of Minneapolis police. But though many demonstrations have been peaceful, the clip shared by the Examiner shows that some have been anything but.

Attack on a cop

The clip begins with a lone black officer being followed and harassed by protesters, even as he attempted to walk away from them and de-escalate the situation. The protesters appeared to make grabs at the officer’s belt and gear, and at one point engaged in a tug-of-war over a backpack the officer was carrying in his hand.

Shouting and cursing ensued, but soon after, the camera pans away from the officer as protesters scrambled amid remarks that the cop had pulled out his firearm.

Once the camera’s view returned to the officer, he was some distance away from the group of demonstrators, and was then joined by another officer. In the clip, shown below, the officer appears to still have his backpack in hand. (Editor’s note: The following video depicts graphic violence and offensive language.)

The Examiner noted that most of the protesters involved were wearing masks, but many were also wearing the distinctive black and red colors of Antifa, an allegedly anti-fascist organization that President Donald Trump has said deserves to be designated as a domestic terror group, as USA Today reports.

Drawing a line

Of course, it remains unclear if the protesters involved were indeed tied to Antifa, but news of the group sowing discord hasn’t slowed amid the nationwide protests over Floyd’s death.

But while Antifa shares the same anti-cop views as the Black Lives Matter movement, it has quickly become clear that they don’t particularly care about black lives — at least, not the lives of black police officers — and are only using the protests over Floyd’s death as a vehicle by which they can further their own more radical goals. Such was the sentiment Attorney General Bill Barr expressed in a presser last Thursday.

“While many have peacefully expressed their anger and grief, others have hijacked protests to engage in lawlessness, violent rioting, arson, looting of businesses, and public property assaults on law enforcement officers and innocent people, and even the murder of a federal agent,” Barr told reporters, according to ABC News.

He went on: “We have evidence that Antifa and other similar extremist groups, as well as actors of a variety of different political persuasions, have been involved in instigating and participating in the violent activity.”

Thankfully, Trump himself has promised to restore “law and order” in America, and has even suggested he may use the military to do so. While it’s important for Americans to be able to speak their minds and protest against government overreach, the line has to be drawn somewhere — and attacking police officers surely crosses it.
