R. Kelly found guilty of federal child porn charges in Chicago

R&B artist R. Kelly was convicted Wednesday on federal child pornography charges for making videos in which he was abusing his 14-year-old goddaughter.

The month-long trial was held in Chicago and included testimony from the now-37-year-old victim and excerpts from the videos Kelly was convicted of making.

The victim was only called “Jane” to protect her identity.

The jury found Kelly guilty of six of the 13 charges after 11 hours of deliberation. Each count of the conviction carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five to 10 years in prison.

The truth comes out

The new sentence will be on top of another 30-year prison sentence Kelly was given in June for a separate sex trafficking and racketeering case in Brooklyn.

Kelly was acquitted of a charge that he had rigged an earlier trial in 2008 on similar charges, of which he was acquitted.

He was also acquitted of conspiracy charges and two counts of receiving child porn.

Prosecutors called Kelly a “sexual predator” who used his fame in the music business to gain access to his underage victims and record himself abusing them.

“Robert Kelly abused many girls over many years,” Assistant US Attorney Elizabeth Pozolo told the jurors, using his full name.  “He committed horrible crimes against children. … All these years later, the hidden side of Robert Kelly has come out.”

The truth?

The victim in this trial, Jane, testified that Kelly had sex with her “innumerable” times and asked her to recruit other girls that he also had sex with.

Kelly’s lawyers called all the witnesses “perjurers, blackmailers and extortionists.”

“They came in here to tell the government’s version of the truth,” the attorney said.
