It’s time to ‘choose freedom’: Rand Paul advocates defiance of COVID restrictions

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a licensed physician, released a video Monday that advocated defiance of continuing COVID-19 restrictions and mandates, including masking schoolkids and mandating vaccines, the Washington Examiner reported.

“It’s time for us to resist. They can’t arrest all of us,” Paul said in the video. “They can’t keep all of your kids home from school. They can’t keep every government building closed, although I’ve got a long list of ones they might keep closed or ought to keep closed.”

Paul suggested that politicians are using “fear and propaganda” that is harming children, the economy, and society as a whole.

What about natural immunity?

Paul may be one of few unvaccinated senators because after having COVID-19 early in the pandemic, he asserted that he developed natural immunity to it and didn’t need the vaccine in addition.

He criticized the early pandemic restrictions as unnecessary and has advocated freedom of choice concerning masks, lockdowns, and COVID-19 vaccines.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hasn’t followed the “science,” Paul has stated in the past, suggesting that the agency is basing decisions on politics.

He addressed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who told Capitol Police to arrest anyone on the property without a mask, and accused the speaker of attempting to establish a “drunk-with-power reign over the Capitol.”

“Anti-science”

Paul also said that people should reject President Joe Biden’s and the CDC’s “anti-science” mandates, restrictions, and possible future lockdowns. “No one should follow the CDC’s anti-science mask mandates,” he said.

Children should not be kept out of in-person learning, Paul added, because teachers have had ample time to get vaccinated and children are at less risk from the COVID-19 virus than they are from seasonal flu.

Although the delta variant of COVID-19 is more transmissible than the original strain and has led to a higher number of new cases, it has proved to be less deadly, and hospitalizations and deaths from the virus are rising at a much more modest rate than case counts.

Even so, Paul is responding to the tendency of politicians, especially on the left, to reach for power in an authoritarian fashion as a way of responding to the increase in case counts. There is no legitimate reason for them to do so, and Paul is right on the money in saying that Americans should resist their efforts.
