Recent polling and statements from lawmakers on the left and right suggest diminishing public support for President Joe Biden’s adamant and unconditional financial and military aid for Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion.
Now one Democratic legislator, Rep. Jaime Raskin (D-MD), is pushing back against that flagging support by linking the defense of Ukraine with the defense of progressive values globally, and seemingly used all of the far left’s “woke” talking points and terminology to do so, Breitbart reported.
Raskin’s remarks came amid intense controversy and the withdrawal of a letter from progressive Democrats, which Raskin had signed, urging diplomacy to end the war as well as in response to the recent suggestion from top House Republicans that a GOP-led Congress wouldn’t issue any additional “blank checks” for aid to Ukraine.
Support slipping for unconditional aid to Ukraine
It was on Oct. 18 that Punchbowl News reported that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the likely next House Speaker, said further aid to Ukraine — after more than $60 billion in assistance has already been delivered — would undergo extra scrutiny and accountability in a GOP-led House.
“I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won’t do it,” McCarthy said. “It’s not a free blank check. And then there’s the things [the Biden administration] is not doing domestically.”
“Ukraine is important, but at the same time it can’t be the only thing they do and it can’t be a blank check,” he added.
Less than a week after that, Politico reported, the Congressional Progressive Caucus released a letter — which had first been drafted in June and was signed by 30 members, including Raskin — that urged the Biden administration to seek out and utilize any opportunity to engage in diplomacy and negotiations with Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine.
That letter was almost immediately withdrawn amid fierce backlash from those who continue to support the provision of unconditional taxpayer-funded aid to Ukraine, but Breitbart noted that a recent Trafalgar poll showed that only around 40 percent of Americans continued to favor such unconditional financial and military assistance for Ukraine.
Raskin demands support for the fight for progressive ideals in Ukraine
Now comes Rep. Raskin with a lengthy statement that decried the diminished support for Ukraine aid and extolled the progressive virtues of the embattled former Soviet republic in its fight against the domination and territorial ambitions of Russia, which the congressman labeled as an imperialistic and fascistic colonizer.
“Moscow right now is a hub of corrupt tyranny, censorship, authoritarian repression, police violence, propaganda, government lies and disinformation, and planning for war crimes,” Raskin wrote. “It is a world center of antifeminist, antigay, anti-trans hatred, as well as the homeland of replacement theory for export. In supporting Ukraine, we are opposing these fascist views, and supporting the urgent principles of democratic pluralism.”
As for the Ukrainians, Raskin praised their “young and diverse” leadership, their Jewish President Volodymyr Zelensky, the fact that women were allowed to serve in combat and military leadership, that “sexual minorities” were protected and represented, and that the Ukrainian people as a whole had displayed “toleration and decency.”
Whether any or all of that is true or not is actually unknown, but in Raskin’s apparent view, all Americans — and especially progressives — should continue to support the provision of unconditional aid to Ukraine in order to defend and expand the far-left progressive values that he and other Democrats hold dear.
