Reality TV star Jim Bob Duggar mounts bid for Arkansas state Senate

A reality TV star is running for the Arkansas state Senate.

Known for starring as the patriarch of the family in TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, Jim Bob Duggar announced his candidacy in a Facebook post Friday, Fox News reported.

“I am honored to announce my candidacy for Arkansas State Senate District 7,” Duggar wrote. “Northwest Arkansas is my lifelong home. It’s where my wife Michelle and I have raised our 20 children. It’s where we’ve grown our small businesses. It’s where we’ve built a life centered around our faith, family, and friends.”

He added, “It’s important to us to give back and to help others in every way we can.”

“Foundational principles”

As a conservative, Duggar said that if elected, he wants to re-establish the “foundational principles” that made our country “great.”

“I’m running for State Senate because these are unprecedented times in our nation,” the star said in his Facebook post, according to the Daily Mail.

“Out-of-control bureaucrats have put politics over common-sense policy with government mandates that force people to choose between earning a paycheck and violating their personal rights and beliefs. The foundational principles that have made our nation great are under threat like never before,” he added.

“Now more than ever,” Duggar said, “we need a bold voice that is pro-family, pro-business, pro-gun and pro-life. It’s time for conservatives to demand courageous leadership that puts Arkansas families, jobs, and our constitutional liberties first. I look forward to being your voice in the Arkansas State Senate.”

What are the odds?

This is not Duggar’s first stint in politics. Previously, the reality TV personality spent four years in the Arkansas House of Representatives before being defeated in 2002.

Nearly 20 years later, it’s unclear what chances Duggar has of claiming the state Senate seat. Some have suggested his son Josh’s legal troubles may complicate matters.

The 33-year-old was recently arrested on child pornography charges, Fox reported. He’s been indicted on two counts of downloading and possessing child pornography, and is facing up to two decades in prison as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

Josh Duggar’s trial is expected to begin by the end of next month.
