Progressive Rep. Cori Bush finds her vehicle shot up with bullets in St. Louis

A vehicle belonging to one of Congress’ most progressive Democrats was struck by bullets last weekend.

According to Breitbart, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) addressed the attack on her car in a tweet on Thursday, saying she was “touched by everyone who has reached out.”

“Thankfully no one was harmed. But any act of gun violence shakes your soul,” the St. Louis-based congresswoman wrote. “That’s why our movement is working to invest in our communities, eradicate the root causes of gun violence, and keep everyone safe,” Bush added.

Second time in as many years

According to St. Louis’ NBC 5, the incident occurred early last Saturday, when Bush’s vehicle was parked and unoccupied. The outlet reports that the attack did not appear to have been targeted.

“Like far too many of us in St. Louis, experiencing gun violence is all too familiar,” Bush said in a statement.

This is not the first time that Bush’s car has been struck by bullets; according to Breitbart, the lawmaker tweeted about a similar experience in 2020.

“My car took the bullets. I am safe,” she said alongside photos of the damage. “A bullet went through my door handle on one side of the car, another went through my tire on the other side.

“When I say that I am the people I serve, it’s not a slogan!” Bush boasted. “I’m committed to taking us from ‘surviving St. Louis’ to ‘living it.'”

Bush, who is known as a vocal proponent of defunding law enforcement and strict gun control, attracted criticism last year after Fox News revealed that she pays for a private armed security detail.

Not the only one

Like Bush, Democrat Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (PA) has advocated for cutting law enforcement funding, and last month, she too came face-to-face with violent crime.

Fox News reported on Dec. 22 that Scanlon had been carjacked at gunpoint in Philadelphia following a meeting. Her office issued a statement explaining that the Democrat lawmaker “was physically unharmed.”

According to Fox, Philadelphia has seen a sharp escalation in violent crime over the past year, with its homicide rate rising 13% in 2021 compared to 2020.
