A Republican congressman just gave Vice President Kamala Harris one of the strongest rebukes yet for her refusal to visit the U.S.–Mexico border amid an ongoing migration crisis.
Just the News reports that Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) said Friday that there’s “something wrong” when “people on the terrorist watch list can find America’s southern border, and the vice president of the United States can’t.”
Scalise’s scorching comments came during a talk at Friday’s Faith and Freedom Coalition conference.
There, according to Just the News, Scalise noted that Harris has yet to visit the southern border, despite a recent surge in migration that has overwhelmed border officials and facilities.
“There are people on the terrorist watch list from the Middle East who have roamed across our southern border in the last six months,” Scalise said. “So people on the terrorist watch list can find America’s southern border, and the vice president of the United States can’t. There’s something wrong there.”
Scalise’s remarks reportedly referred to the fact that at least two individuals from the terror watch list have been apprehended at the U.S.–Mexico border since the start of this year.
According to Fox News, the development was recently revealed by FBI Director Christopher Wray — and it allowed Scalise to make a strong point.
Speaking Friday, Scalise also became just the latest lawmaker to invite Harris to visit the southern border to see firsthand what’s going on there.
“Vice President Harris, come down to our southern border and look at the debacle that you and President Biden have created and fix it,” the congressman said, according to Just the News. “We’ll tell you how to do it.”
Both Democrats and Republicans from border states have made similar offers in recent months, but Harris appears to have mostly ignored them. She recently said that she will visit the southern border on her own, Reuters reported, but a date has yet to be set for that.
Trump’s policies “worked”
In terms of fixing the southern border crisis, Scalise told Harris to adopt the policies of former President Donald Trump, because, in his words, they “worked.”
“I know the left hates Donald Trump, well, go call it your own wall,” the House minority whip said Friday, as Just the News reported. “Call it your own ‘remain in Mexico’ policy. Whatever you want to do. Those things worked. President Trump negotiated an agreement with Mexico to say if you want to seek asylum, stay in Mexico to do it because 95% of the claims are rejected.”
