A new report from Punchbowl News reveals that Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has privately been positioning himself to replace Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as House speaker.
The outlet reports:
Schiff is weighing a bid for speaker if House Democrats keep the majority and Pelosi exits, or minority leader if Democrats end up out of power, according to sources close to the California Democrat.
Punchbowl News goes on to report that “Schiff is so interested in moving up that he’s already having conversations with Democratic colleagues about these possibilities.”
Over the past year, many questions have been raised about Pelosi’s future.
Initially, reports indicated that Pelosi, with the Democrats likely to lose their majority in the midterm elections, was planning on retiring. Pelosi, however, contradicted these reports in January by announcing her re-election.
While we have made progress much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives. This election is crucial: nothing less is at stake than our Democracy. But we don’t agonize-we organize. I am running for re-election to Congress to deliver For The People and defend Democracy.
The other question is whether Pelosi will look to retain the speakership should the Democrats retain their majority. This is a question that Pelosi has refused to answer.
Punchbowl’s latest report states that, despite what Pelosi has said, “Pelosi is likely to leave if Democrats lose the House.” We’ll see.
What are his chances?
Schiff does have some things going for him in his apparent quest to become the next House speaker for the Democrats. For one thing, he brings in the money for the Democrats, and he has been close to Pelosi.
Back in 2018, in fact, the Los Angeles Times released an article in which it reported that Pelosi “has quietly been grooming potential successors, among them Rep. Adam Schiff.” Other potential candidates include Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and Steny Hoyer (D-MD), majority leader of the House.
It ought to also be noted that other reports have suggested that Schiff has bigger ambitions than the House speakership, such as a Senate seat.
The bottom line is that there is a lot of uncertainty both with regard to Schiff’s future and Pelosi’s. However, it does appear that big changes in the Democratic Party may be on the horizon.
