Report: CNN firing Brian Stelter part of “coming shakeup”

CNN made headlines last week when it announced that vocal anti-Trump anchor Brian Stelter was being fired. However, a new report suggests that he isn’t the only one who will be getting the boot.

According to News Cycle president Jon Nicosia, CNN is about to undergo a shake-up that will leave its left-wing lineup in shambles.

A slew of anti-Trump anchors could be on the way out

Nicosia made that claim in a series of tweets he posted on Friday, asserting that some of the cable network’s most recognizable faces will soon be getting the boot.

Nicosia then cited a CNN source as saying that Stelter was promoting dissension within the company while developing a vastly inflated sense of his own importance.

Stelter’s firing comes months after CNN president Chris Licht took over the network from previous president Mark Zucker.

Axios noted in June that whereas Zucker made attacks on former President Donald Trump and his supporters a major theme of CNN’s programming, Licht is said to be interested in setting a less overtly partisan tone.

This includes having hosts carry out “respectful interviews that don’t feel like PR stunts” while telling producers and bookers to make “programming decisions that are focused on nuance, not noise.”

Stakeholder wants CNN to practice “the kind of journalism that it started with”

That objective fits with remarks made last fall by John Malone, a billionaire media mogul whose company controls a major stake in CNN’s parent company Discovery-TimeWarner.

“I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing,” Malone said during an interview with CNBC this past November.

“I do believe good journalism could have a role in this future portfolio that Discovery-TimeWarner’s going to represent,” he continued.
