Report: Dems will continue to pursue Pres. Biden’s BBB bill, despite Sen. Manchin’s opposition

Fox News reports that the Democrats are not giving up on President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill, despite Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) declaration that he will not vote for it.

According to the outlet, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is likely to try to “revive” the legislation after the holidays. Fox inferred this from a statement that Pelosi made after Manchin said that he will not be supporting the bill.

Pelosi, in that statement, said that she is “hopeful that we will soon reach an agreement so that this vital legislation can pass as soon as possible next year.”

It’s not over

In addition to Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) also put out a statement in which he made it clear that he will not be giving up on the Build Back Better bill.

Schumer, Fox reports in a separate article, wrote a memo to his colleagues on Monday saying that Manchin’s opposition will neither “delay, nor other recent pronouncements, will deter us from continuing to try to find a way forward.”

“We simply cannot give up,” Schumer wrote, adding that senators “should be aware that the Senate will, in fact, consider the Build Back Better Act, very early in the new year so that every Member of this body has the opportunity to make their position known on the Senate floor, not just on television.”

“We are going to vote on a revised version of the House-passed Build Back Better Act—and we will keep voting on it until we get something done,” Schumer said.

These statements from Democrat leadership come after Manchin, on television on Sunday, declared that he will not be supporting the Build Back Better bill.

“I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation,” Manchin said during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “This is a no,” he added. “I have tried everything I know to do.”

Manchin, given the current makeup of the Senate, has the ability to single-handedly sink the bill even though the Democrats are trying to push it through Congress using budget reconciliation, which only requires a simple majority. And, that is what Manchin appears to have done.

The Democrats have responded with an all-out attack on Manchin. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki accused Manchin of breaching “his commitments” to Biden and to Congress.

The question going forward is whether Manchin will remain firm during this onslaught.
