Report: DeSantis’ fight with Disney has other woke companies worried

Earlier this year, the Walt Disney Company made headlines when it vocally opposed a Florida law that banned discussion of sexuality and gender identity with students in kindergarten to third grade.

However, that opposition appears to have come at a cost, as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis later signed a bill stripping Disney of its privileges under state law. Now, a new report suggests that other companies are beginning to worry.

Corporate CEO’s “alarmed” at anti-woke pushback

According to a piece published in the Wall Street Journal last Sunday, DeSantis’ actions have “alarmed leaders across the corporate sphere.”

Authors Chip Cutter and Emily Glazer noted that while “vocal employees have in recent years pushed bosses to take public stands on social and political issues,” the outcome in Florida “has raised the stakes.”

That’s the view of Bill George, who formerly served as chairman and CEO of Medtronic PLC and is now a senior fellow at Harvard Business School.

“The No. 1 concern CEOs have is, ‘When should I speak out on public issues?'” George was quoted as telling Cutter and Glazer.

“As one CEO said to me, ‘I want to speak out on social issues, but I don’t want to get involved in politics,'” George recalled, adding, “Which I said under my breath, ‘That’s not possible.'”

Attorney: Conservatives growing bolder

Attorney David Berger agreed that things have become riskier for left-wing companies as conservatives have grown bolder when it comes to pushing back.

“It used to be that Republicans especially—but both parties—liked big business,” Berger explained. “And now what you’re seeing is both parties like to use big business as political footballs one way or the other.”

For their part, Democrats are continuing to lash out at DeSantis as well as other like-minded members of the GOP, something that was evidenced by President Joe Biden’s remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

“A lot of people say the Republican Party is too extreme, too divisive, too controlled by one person,” the Daily Wire quoted Biden as declaring. “They say it’s not your father’s Republican Party.”

“Ronald Reagan said, ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear this wall down! Today’s Republicans say, tear down Mickey Mouse’s house. And pretty soon they’ll be storming Cinderella’s castle, and you can be sure of it,” he went on.
