A legal battle may be brewing between CNN and Chris Cuomo, following the outlet’s recent termination of Cuomo.
The New York Post reports that Cuomo is threatening to sue CNN.
Per the Post:
Fired CNN host Chris Cuomo is set to sue the network if it balks at paying him at least $18 million to cover what’s left on his contract, sources told The Post on Monday.
The Post goes on to quote an insider as saying that CNN has “no intention of paying [Chris] Cuomo a penny.”
Over the weekend, CNN announced that it was firing Cuomo after “additional information has come to light” about the assistance that Cuomo gave to his brother, disgraced ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, with regard to the sexual misconduct allegations that Andrew has been facing.
“Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother’s defense,” CNN said. “We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately. While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light. Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate.”
What CNN has yet to explain, however, is what this “additional information” is. According to the latest reports, Cuomo’s firing might have to do with a sexual misconduct allegation of his own that he is facing. But, CNN has yet to confirm any of this.
Cuomo, now, has also decided to resign from his SiriusXM Radio show, “Let’s Get After It with Chris Cuomo.”
“The way my time ended at CNN was hard,” Cuomo wrote. “While I have a thick skin, I also have a family, for whom the past week has been extraordinarily difficult. So, right now, I have to take a step back and focus on what comes next. That means I will no longer be doing my Sirius XM radio show.”
So, it looks as though Cuomo is setting up for a massive lawsuit against CNN in which he will seek damages in addition to the $18 to $20 million that he requesting for his contract.
It is unclear how good Cuomo’s chances are at winning. The Post reports an insider as saying, “CNN has a standard morality clause in their contract that says if the employee does anything of disrepute, they can be immediately fired.” This would seem to suggest that Cuomo might have a hard time winning such a lawsuit, but there could also be nuances at play that we don’t know about.
Either way, watching Cuomo and CNN duke it out in court could be some of the best entertainment that either has ever provided.
