A new report from The Atlantic suggests that a number of top Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), could soon resign from their leadership positions.
“For the first time since Barack Obama was a state senator, House Democrats are on the verge of getting new leaders,” the outlet writes.
“The day is coming.”
The article was written by Edward-Isaac Dovere, and it appears to, mostly, be based on his own speculation after having spoken with a number of insiders.
According to Dovere, the change of guard, so-to-speak, will take place “sometime in the not-so-distant future.” Dovere suggests that it will be “probably after next year’s midterm elections,” which does make sense as Republicans are expected to retake the House.
Dovere predicts that at that time – after the 2022 midterm elections – Pelosi “will announce that she’s stepping down.” And, Dovere believes that Pelosi’s “top deputies,” Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC), will likely also step aside, due to their age.
Dovere goes on to suggest that Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), will likely be Pelosi’s replacement. In other words, the next time that the Democrats have power after Pelosi retires, Jeffries would be expected to be the House Speaker. Again, Dovere bases this on conversations with insiders.
Dovere spends the rest of the piece talking about Jeffries and the dynamics within the Democratic party.
Democrats have not publicly said anything that would agree with Dovere’s statements, and Dovere told his readers that they shouldn’t expect such statements.
“Democratic members of Congress won’t talk about any of this publicly, as if Pelosi might suddenly appear and pull their hearts from their chests,” Dovere wrote.
Over the past few years, there have been other reports that have suggested that Pelosi could be on her way out. But, the authenticity of all of them has been questioned.
One of the most well-known ones was a report that claimed that Pelosi would resign if former President Donald trump was reelected in 2020. The story, though, is claimed to have been false.
So, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the near future. And, as stated, the midterm elections will likely play an important role in any decision-making by Pelosi.
