Republican lawmaker revives effort to ‘cancel’ Democrats over past support of slavery: Report

A Republican lawmaker is redoubling his efforts to make the Democrats “cancel” themselves over the party’s historic association with racial injustice.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) is bringing back a resolution that would make House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her fellow Dems “barred from participation in the House of Representatives,” owing to the party’s past support of slavery, as Breitbart reports.

Canceling Democrats?

Gohmert’s resolution is a tongue-in-cheek response to the “cancel culture” promoted by Democrats and left-wing activists, which over the summer led to the removal — and often outright destruction — of statues that critics considered racist.

While Democrats accuse Republicans of racism, Gohmert recalls that Democrats historically supported slavery, Jim Crow, and other injustices. Meanwhile, the party of Lincoln supported emancipation and civil rights for freed slaves during Reconstruction.

“While Democrats continue to denounce our country ad nauseam over ‘systemic racism,’ they somehow always fail to take responsibility for their own party’s abhorrent historical views and policies which promulgated racism in our nation for decades,” Gohmert said in a statement this week, according to Breitbart.

For Democrats to be consistent, Gohmert argues in the resolution, the party must “either change its name or be barred from participation in the House of Representatives.”

According to Fox News, the resolution also calls to “remove any items that names, symbolizes, or mentions any political organization or party that has ever held a public position that supported slavery or the Confederacy from any area within the House wing of the Capitol or any House office building.”

“Unparalleled hypocrisy”

Back in July, Gohmert introduced the resolution for the first time after mobs had begun tearing down monuments all over the country and Pelosi had portraits of former House speakers who fought for the Confederacy removed from the Capitol.

“Instead of canceling our culture and history, it’s time to #CancelDemocrats,” he said at the time, adding that Democrats need to “play by their own rules, and accept the standards they have forced onto everyone else,” according to Breitbart.

Although the Republican laments “canceling” any history, Gohmert said he is bringing the resolution back to force Democrats to admit their own “hypocrisy.”

“Though I personally believe we need to learn from history including the good, the bad, and the ugly, the Democratic Party has initiated this purging but needs assistance to avoid unparalleled hypocrisy,” he said in his statement, as Breitbart reported.

In practice, “canceling” tends to only go in one direction, and it’s hard to imagine the Democrats have any intention of changing that. But we can certainly applaud Gohmert for trying.
