House Republicans are confident that they have a straightforward case for impeaching Joe Biden’s top immigration official, who they accuse of a “deliberate” refusal to enforce the law.
Led by Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.), Republicans previewed their case against Department of Homeland Security boss Alejandro Mayorkas at a press conference at the border, Breitbart reported.
Republicans put Mayorkas on notice
Mayorkas has aggressively reversed the Trump administration’s restrictive immigration policies, leading to what McCarthy called the “greatest wave of illegal immigration in recorded history.”
Despite more than 2 million illegal crossings in 2022, Mayorkas has asserted that the border is “secure.” But McCarthy, who is hoping to be Speaker of the House next year, blasted Mayorkas for tying the hands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and even defaming agents for doing their jobs.
“His deliberate suspensions of our laws have proved deadly — fentanyl is now flowing in in record amounts,” McCarthy said. “He has blocked ICE [and the] Border Patrol from enforcing our laws while vilifying them at the same time.”
300 Americans are dying every day from deadly drugs pouring across the border, the “equivalent of an airline crashing each and every day in America,” McCarthy said. Republicans will begin with investigations of Mayorkas’ handling of the border, McCarthy said, and move on to impeachment if warranted.
“House Republicans will investigate every order, every action and every failure to determine whether we can begin an impeachment inquiry,” McCarthy added.
Abuse of power
The Biden administration has long covered its handling of the border in secrecy, so there’s plenty for Republicans to look into. E-mails published last month show that Mayorkas helped Biden falsely accuse border agents of “whipping” immigrants last year.
Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies expressed concern that Republicans will make lots of noise without doing anything substantive. But he said he hopes the push will expose Mayorkas’ abuse of power.
That includes his misuse of “parole” power to indiscriminately admit huge numbers of illegals into the country, something the CIS has reported on extensively.
“Shining a light on the widespread disregard of the law by Biden’s DHS serves an important function. Maybe we can get the issue of immigration parole and its abuse into the broader discussion,” Krikorian said.
The White House dismissed the impeachment threat as a “political stunt,” and they said Republicans have no “plan” for dealing with the crisis that Biden created.
