Republicans could come after Democrats with Jan. 6 committee after midterms

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich believes that Democrats may find themselves on the business end of a committee they created after the midterm elections this fall.

According to Mediaite, the former Republican leader outlined what he believes could be dire consequences for the liberal party if they lose control of both houses of Congress, the way many believe they will.

Gingrich made his comments during an appearance on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo where he went into more detail about an op-ed he wrote for Newsweek earlier in the week which he titled “The Wolves Will Become Sheep.”

“You have — both with Attorney General [MerrickGarland and with this select committee on January 6, people who have run amok,” Gingrich argued.

He added, “What they need to understand is on January 4 next year, you’re going to have a Republican majority in the House and a Republican majority in the Senate. And all these people who have been so tough, and so mean, and so nasty are going to be delivered subpoenas for every document, every conversation, every tweet, every e-mail.”

The former Republican leader went on to call Garland and the Jan. 6 committee a “Lynch mob,” saying that Republicans may go so far as to get prison time for the particularly guilty political opponents if it’s discovered they have been functioning outside the law.

Gingrich argued that the committee is breaking the law by “running over peoples’ civil liberties,” throughout their sweeping investigation through a committee some have argued has no legislative power to begin with.

“I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down,” Gingrich said. “And the wolves are going to find out that they’re now sheep and they’re the ones who are in fact, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kinds of laws they’re breaking.”

Fellow Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was quick to jump on board with Gingrich’s suggestion, telling former Trump strategist Steve Bannon on Monday that “Newt’s right” and Republicans should not be “limp-wristed.”

According to The Daily Beast Gaetz said he believes that the lawmaker said he believes there is more than meets the eye regarding the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, and Republicans should do their best to parse it out:

“Now you have the Jan. 6 event, where I expect that there will be these shadowy, gray area, national security types that are in and around the activation of the increase in criminal acuity of that day,” the Florida congressman blared.

“And not for nothing, Steve, but using a cut-out seems like exactly what they were trying to do to me,” Gaetz said, referencing his suspicion that the FBI was using undercover operatives to set him up.
