Republicans push back on Biden plan they say promotes ‘atheism’ around the world

Indiana Rep. Jim Banks is leading a group of Republicans to demand answers from President Joe Biden about an administration program they say will promote “atheism” and progressive values around the world.

Banks wrote a letter to Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken about the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor’s (DRL) grant program that promotes atheism and “humanism,” according to Fox News.

“We are writing to express our grave concern that the State Department is using appropriated funds to support atheism and radical, progressive orthodoxy across the world,” the group said.

The DRL started a grant program in April titled “DRL FY20 IRF Promoting and Defending Religious Freedom Inclusive of Atheist, Humanist, Non-Practicing and Non-Affiliated Individuals.”

Taxpayers funding atheism

The program would give grants up to $500,000 “to organizations committed to the practice and spread of atheism and humanism, namely in South/Central Asia and in the Middle East/North Africa,” the letter alleged.

In addition to opposing the use of taxpayer money to groups that want to encourage atheism, the Republicans wanted to know what other programs were using taxpayer funds to encourage or discourage any religious or non-religious belief systems.

“Any such program – for any religiously-identifiable group – in the United States would be unconstitutional,” they accused.

The letter also pointed out that the program may ruffle feathers in other countries, as the group didn’t think foreign leaders would take kindly to that kind of U.S. interference in their countries.

Not religious freedom

“This is not ‘religious freedom.’ This NOFO, like others we have reviewed, prioritizes atheists and humanists above all other potential recipients. Not only does such a priority violate both the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses, but also the No Religious Test Clause of Article VI of our nation’s constitution,” the letter continued.

“Americans rightly discern this as a part of the broader effort on the part of your administration to promote radical, progressive orthodoxy abroad,” the Republicans pointed out. “Atheism is an integral part of the belief system of Marxism and communism.

The group also said that “Americans should be alarmed” that the U.S. embassy in Germany is flying a Black Lives Matter flag, and mentioned another initiative to create a “‘Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice,’ whose mission will be to spread Critical Race Theory and other progressive dogmas worldwide, and working to remove restrictions on abortion around the globe.”
