The fallout from the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade continues, as a retired Army general has been suspended from a mentoring role and is now the subject of an internal investigation over a since-deleted social media post needling first lady Jill Biden over her pro-abortion sentiments, as Fox News reports.
According to the outlet, the personnel action and attendant probe was confirmed by the military, and though few additional details were immediately released, USA Today later revealed that the retired general will – at least for the time being – be barred from rendering services under an existing $92-per-hour consulting contract through which he “advises senior officers, staff and students participating in war games” and other activities.
Tweet sparks suspension, probe
The controversy began late last month when, in response to the high court’s ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the first lady posted a message from her official Twitter account blasting the decision and pledging to continue fighting for abortion rights.
“For nearly 50 years, women have had the right to make our own decisions about our bodies,” Mrs. Biden wrote. “Today, that right was stolen from us.”
The first lady continued, “And while we may be devastated by this injustice, we will not be silent. We will not sit back as the progress we have already won slips away,” adding, “[t]omorrow, we will continue to fight – for our daughters and granddaughters, and for ourselves – until all women can decide our own futures once again.”
In response, Volesky tweeted simply, “Glad to see you finally know what a woman is,” an apparent reference to then-Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson’s refusal to define the word “woman” during her Senate confirmation hearings earlier this year, echoing sentiments familiar among progressive leftists who prioritize the LGBTQ+ agenda.
In a statement to Fox News, the Army confirmed the actions taken against Volesky thus far, declaring, “Lt. Gen. Theodore Margin, commanding general of the Combined Arms Center, has suspended retired Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky from performing duties as a Highly Qualified Expert – Senior Mentor pending the outcome of the commander’s inquiry.”
The culture war rages on
The kerfuffle over Volesky’s tweet is the latest skirmish in the battle over liberal insistence on elevating gender identity over biological sex when it comes to policy making, as the Daily Wire notes.
As the outlet’s Matt Walsh explores in his recent documentary film What is a Woman? that seemingly simple question repeatedly proved confounding for leftist activists and academics.
Explaining the twisted logic employed by progressives on the issue, Walsh has written, “They say that biology has nothing to do with womanhood. Well, then what does have something to do with womanhood? If we cannot define a woman physically, how can we define her? What is a woman? What does the word mean?”
“If you are on the left, what exactly are you trying to say the word, woman means/ When you say that such and such biological man is a woman, what are you actually trying to convey about that person? What do you mean that [collegiate transgender swimmer] Lia Thomas is a woman? What is that supposed to mean?”
Kudos to Volesky for having the courage to highlight the absurdity of the mental gymnastics required to follow along with the internally conflicting positions championed by Democrats like Jill Biden, even though doing so may come at significant personal cost.
