Even as hundreds of Americans and allies remain stranded in Afghanistan following the Biden administration’s recent U.S. troop withdrawal, Vice President Kamala Harris remains focused on an upcoming recall election that could oust Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom from office.
In a statement on the matter, the Republican National Committee (RNC) slammed Harris for campaigning on Newsom’s behalf amid the continuing chaos in the Middle East, according to Newsmax.
“On a rescue mission for Gavin Newsom”
The RNC has drawn attention to the issue through online ads and mobile billboards across California while the vice president hits the campaign trail to help save the governor’s political future.
Fox News described some of the political ads being used to shame Harris for appearing to dismiss the Afghanistan crisis in favor of partisan politics.
One mobile billboard displayed on a box truck in the state reads: “Californians are stranded in Afghanistan. Where’s Kamala? Campaigning in California.”
A similar ad complained that as “California students are stranded in Afghanistan Kamala Harris is on a rescue mission for Gavin Newsom.”
According to the Associated Press, at least 30 California students remain trapped after visiting relatives in Afghanistan. Some are U.S. citizens while others have permanent resident status.
“Both pathetic and telling”
California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson released her own statement calling attention to what she described as inappropriate behavior by the vice president.
“It is both pathetic and telling that Vice President Harris and Governor Newsom think political campaigning is a better use of time today than working to rescue the California children and their families, Americans and allies who were abandoned in Afghanistan by the Biden administration,” she declared.
RNC spokesperson Hallie Balch said the actions call into question the Biden administration’s priorities, asserting: “Instead of trying to save Gavin Newsom’s job, the embattled governor, President Biden, and Vice President Harris should be doing everything they can to get stranded California children home from Afghanistan safely.”
As for the committee’s ad hoc political ads, she said they “will make it clear to Californians just what sits on top of Democrats’ priority list: political power.”
Democrats appear to be bringing out the big guns to bolster Newsom as polling shows he stands a legitimate chance of being recalled and replaced by a Republican challenger in the upcoming election.
