Romney rips ‘irresponsible,’ ‘reckless’ Democrats for delaying stimulus bill

For once, infamous “Never-Trumper” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) surprised us by being on the same page as President Donald Trump, who has called on Congress to stop bickering and pass a coronavirus relief bill quickly.

In a statement full of Romney-an righteousness, the Republican senator slammed “reckless” Democrats for shooting down a nearly $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package Sunday, the Washington Examiner reported.

“Nothing in the Senate has shocked me, until today,” Romney tweeted Sunday night. “Standing in the way of a critically needed rescue package is irresponsible and reckless.”

Romney slams “reckless” Democrats

Along with four other senators, Romney missed a pair of votes on the stimulus package while in isolation. Romney went into quarantine Sunday on doctor’s orders after coming into contact with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), the first U.S. senator to test positive for COVID-19.

With millions of Americans facing financial distress, the Senate can’t seem to agree on a relief package to cushion the impact of an economic downturn. The upper chamber failed to move the bill forward Sunday, as disagreements between Republicans and Democrats persisted.

“Dems say not enough money to states: nearly $200 billion isn’t chump change. Hospitals get at least $75 billion,” Romney continued in his Sunday night peroration.

Democrats have criticized the Senate GOP legislation as a giveaway to corporations that does not contain enough oversight to protect workers. Republicans, in response, accused Democrats of trying to stuff the bill with liberal agenda items that are not related to the pandemic. Democrats rejected the bill a second time on Monday, prompting another jab from Romney:

With hundreds of thousands being laid off every single day and employers shutting down—some permanently—this is no time for Dems to dither, hoping to win corporate social engineering points. Shameful, destructive, and dangerous.

Stunner: Romney, Trump on same page

To a certain kind of Republican, Romney is as close to a Democrat as they come in the GOP. President Donald Trump, no fan of Romney, appeared to make light of his self-isolation upon hearing that Romney is in quarantine. But the president seems to be in agreement with Romney on the stimulus, as Trump insists that Congress must stop the partisan nonsense and pass a bill to help Americans now.

“Congress must approve the deal, without all of the nonsense, today. The longer it takes, the harder it will be to start up our economy. Our workers will be hurt!” he tweeted Tuesday.

Fate of bill uncertain

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) dismissed the Democrats’ demands Monday as a grab bag of left-wing policy items like environmental standards to fight climate change. A separate bill proposed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appeared to veer even further into liberal fantasy land than the Senate’s version, with numerous items to promote “diversity.”

But Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, and Pelosi have all expressed hope that a final bill can be hammered out Tuesday.

Mitt Romney may be a self-righteous bundle of platitudes, but when you’re right, you’re right.
