President Joe Biden is seemingly suffering from declining cognitive abilities and abysmal approval numbers, leading to skepticism around whether he will seek another term.
This has left some wondering if Vice President Kamala Harris is next in line to get the Democratic Party’s nomination in 2024. However, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently said he knows the reason why that won’t happen.
DeSantis calls Harris “the best insurance”
According to the Washington Examiner, DeSantis addressed Harris’ political future while at a campaign stop this weekend in Sarasota County.
The Republican governor argued that Harris is widely unlined, and that this unpopularity is part of the reason why she was selected to serve as Biden’s vice president.
“She’s the best insurance for him for the 25th Amendment or impeachment you could ever really have,” DeSantis was quoted as saying. “No matter how bad Biden does, nobody wants Harris. … He did it to protect himself.”
Survey data seems to lead some credence to DeSantis’ theory, as Harris manages to poll even worse than the president does.
According to a poll aggregate published by FiveThirtyEight, Biden’s average approval rating currently stands at 41.4%, which is just over half a point lower than former President Donald Trump was at this juncture in his presidency.
On the other hand, Harris’ average approval rating comes in at just 39.5%, with some individual polls putting the figure as low as 35%.
Ex-Republican says both Biden and Harris should bow out in 2024
George Will is a NeverTrump former Republican commentator who voted for Biden and Harris two years ago, and in a recent column he argued that neither one should be on the ballot two years from now.
“Transcripts of her verbal meanderings cannot convey their eerie strangeness,” Will wrote of Harris last week, adding, “Videos of them should be watched.”
“Meanwhile, here are her Proustian thoughts about broadband in Louisiana: ‘The governor and I and we were all doing a tour of the library here and talking about the significance of the passage of time. Right? The significance of the passage of time.'”
“‘So, when you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time in terms of what we need to do to lay these wires, what we need to do to create these jobs. And there is such great significance to the passage of time when we think about a day in the life of our children.'”
