Extraordinarily low approval ratings for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris may have finally begun to weigh on party decision-makers, if rumors going around Washington are to be believed.
Democrats are becoming desperate, and rumors say that Biden allies are looking for a way to replace Harris on the 2024 ticket. Even The New York Times has begun to suggest that Biden is too old to keep being president.
Let’s be real: There has never been any love lost between Biden and Harris. She called him racist early on in the primaries, and he took weeks to choose her as his vice president even though she was clearly the best he could find if he had to choose a Black woman.
They have never really gotten along, but now the feud between them seems to be intensifying as Democrats’ election prospects implode.
As far back as April when Harris tested positive for COVID-19, New York Magazine noted that she admitted that she wasn’t one of the president’s close contacts. And they have apparently only had lunch together twice in 2022.
The article also noted that Pete Buttigieg had apparently been doing some groundwork for a presidential run in 2024 himself, and it also put forward several others that could be contenders: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Govs. Roy Cooper (D-NC), Phil Murphy (D-NJ), and Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
It seems doubtful that any of these alternatives could win in 2024, but they might at least show the party is trying to move forward instead of sticking with “President Depends” until he’s 86 years old.
And while these other choices are all leaders in the Democrat party, they share something in common that has become a secret sin in the party: they are all white men.
Turning the tables
It seems that Biden’s handlers coming to terms with a current reality: if they don’t get rid of Harris, she may be the next president even before 2024.
In Harris’s and her allies’ view, it makes perfect sense to dump Biden now claiming mental or physical “unfitness” rather than later. She may not be electable, but she may be more re-electable if she’s already been president for a while.
She also lets Democrats claim the first woman president, and a Black woman at that. Who cares if she’s going to royally suck at the job for the next two-plus years, maybe even worse than Biden has so far?
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
