19-year old Russian hockey player killed by puck

A 19-year old Russian hockey player died after getting struck in the head with the puck, Fox News reported.

Timur Faizutdinov, a defenseman and captain of Dynamo St. Petersburg’s junior team, was tragically killed during a playoff game Friday.

Faizutdinov can be seen collapsing on the ice in an upsetting video of the horrific incident, which unfolded in the neutral zone during a game between Dynamo St. Petersburg and Loko Yaroslavl, both teams in the Junior Hockey League (MHL), a subsidiary of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Paramedics tried vainly save him

Paramedics and team doctors rushed to his aid, but it wasn’t enough to save him. He was brought to a local hospital in Yaroslavl, and died after “doctors fought for Timur’s life over the course of three days,” the MHL said.

“The Kontinental Hockey League is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of JHL Dynamo St. Petersburg player, Timur Fayzutdinov, after he sustained a head injury during a JHL fixture on 12th March,” the Kontinental Hockey League said.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time,” the league added.

Dynamo also shared their grief over Faizutdinov’s untimely passing: “Today, The defender of Dynamo St. Petersburg, Timur Faizutdinov, passed away. The club expresses its condolences to Timur’s family and friends… Forever at Dynamo. Forever in our hearts.”

Tragic death

The exact cause of the death is not known at this time.

Born in Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2001, Faizutdinov scored 19 assists and played 191 games during his four years with Dynamo. He also played for Russia’s Under-17 and Under-16 teams.

The Kontinental Hockey League said that Wednesday’s and Thursday’s playoff games would start with a moment of silence. Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins also honored Faizutdinov with a number 77 sticker on his helmet during Tuesday’s game.

While these freak incidents are rare, this is far from the first death to occur in the famously intense and often bloody sport. Sixteen-year-old Alexander Orekhov was killed in 2016 after getting hit in the neck with a puck, and in 2012, 16-year old Maxim Koposov died after getting hit in the chest with one.

What a terrible tragedy.
