Russian lawmaker says Ukraine “needs to be eliminated”

It has been over a month since Russian dictator Vladimir Putin ordered his forces to launch an invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

Yet rather than simply taking the country over, one observer says that Putin’s goal is complete destruction.

That’s the case Daily Beast columnist and Russian media analyst Julia Davis made in a series of tweets on Friday. One of them features a screenshot from state television showing a Russian lawmaker.

“After blaming the UK and US for Russia’s war against Ukraine, the Russian lawmaker asserted that Ukraine shouldn’t be allowed to exist,” Davis tweeted.

Russian politician and television host call for “ripping heads off” Ukrainians

“It’s a cancerous growth that needs to be eliminated all the way to the border with Poland,” she quoted the man as saying. “We can’t allow even a small part of it to remain.”

Another tweet included a screenshot from a Russian news program that Davis says featured more calls for violence against Ukrainians.

“One pundit on Russian TV tried to argue that denazification doesn’t consist of ripping heads off,” Davis wrote, a reference to Putin’s justification for the invasion.

NATO source says Russia has taken significant casualties

“Lawmaker Alexei Zhuravlyov disagreed: ‘It’s accomplished by shooting or ripping heads off.’ Host Olga Skabeeva agreed: ‘Denazification is usually conducted by knocking heads off.'”

Later Davis added, “To emphasize the obvious, these Kremlin mouthpieces and many Russians watching at home clearly realize that they’re not talking about eliminating phantom ‘Nazis,’ but about killing all Ukrainians who dare to defend their homeland from Russian invaders.”

However, despite the harsh rhetoric, there is evidence to suggest that Russia is struggling with significant losses among its troops.

Fox News reported on Wednesday that a senior NATO official estimates that between 7,000 to 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine since the invasion began.
