Russia’s Head of Military Defense thought to be missing after disappearing from public eye for weeks

Getting accurate information in wartime is always a challenge. However, it’s curious that a key member of the Russian government hasn’t surfaced in days during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Sergei Shoigu, head of military defense in Russia, last made a public appearance nearly two weeks ago, Fox News reported. Some have speculated that something is amiss as the usually publicity-hungry official has not been seen since March 11.

Shoigu’s last appearance was to present an award to Russian troops in Ukraine. Rumors are swirling about what could have happened to Shoigu though the news outlet has yet to nail down any firm explanation.

Some speculate that perhaps Shoigu has been having heart or other health troubles that have kept him sidelined. However, a darker rumor from the Russian press suggests that Shoigu was put on house arrest after being removed from his position.

The official story from the Kremlin is that Shoigu and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on March 18 for an update on “the progress of the special operation in Ukraine” otherwise known as an invasion into a sovereign nation. However, there are no videos or images from the meeting leading some to believe it’s untrue.

Even Russian news outlets are beginning to suspect something is amiss. According to Russian journalist Dmitry Treschanin, who works for Mediazona, the state-run media RIA has been quiet about Shoigu’s whereabouts since March 11.

“Listen, the great PR minister Shoigu has been out of public space since March 11th,” Treschanin tweeted Wednesday. “ELEVEN DAYS OF WAR, we do not have the head of the Ministry of Defense.”

Putin may have bitten off more than he can chew with Ukraine, and perhaps the people closest to him are paying the price. Still, there are many questions yet to be answered about the whereabouts of this key member of his administration.
