Sanctuary city mayors singing different tune after busloads of immigrants descend

A new Washington Examiner op-ed poked fun at liberals who are having a fit over illegal immigrants being bussed into their cities from border towns in Texas and Arizona.

Online opinion editor David Freddoso’s piece, titled “Being a sanctuary city is all fun and games until the migrants actually show up,” chronicles the reactions of Democrat mayors Muriel Bowser (DC) and Eric Adams (NYC) as well as the impact busloads of illegal immigrants on the local Latino communities.

“Latinos in South Texas are now the vanguard of the ongoing Republican realignment of the national Hispanic vote,” Freddoso wrote, calling the disgruntled Latinos “Biden Republicans.”

He labeled the mayors’ complaints “East Coast privilege,” saying that the “sanctuary city” leaders are fine with open borders when they don’t affect them.

“The last thing we want”

Bowser in particular has asked for federal funding and the National Guard, even though leftists have been against giving more funding and Guard support to border cities.

Immigrant advocates are standing against Bowser’s requests. “The last thing we want is a militarized response to a humanitarian crisis,” core organizer with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network Andrea Scherff said.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a briefing that bussing immigrants to so-called “sanctuary cities” is disrupting the “process in place for managing migrants at the border,” but Freddoso said there was “no process for dealing with the situation at the border.”

If there was a process that works, border state governors wouldn’t have to bus immigrants out of the area to get relief.

Not fair

It’s not fair to let sanctuary city mayors give lip service to practically open borders but sound the alarm when the open borders come to their jurisdiction.

And it’s poetic justice to see these mayors confront some of the realities border cities are dealing with at a much more intense level.

The fact is, none of these illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country while they wait for asylum hearings that are highly unlikely to be successful.

Biden is creating huge problems for the country that will be difficult to solve even if border rules tighten in the future.
