It’s been three weeks since Fox News first reported that President Joe Biden had tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to oversee his administration’s response to the ongoing migration crisis on America’s southern border.
But despite Biden expressing confidence in Harris’ diplomatic abilities, the vice president seems to have taken little in the way of public action. In a humiliating defeat for the VP this week, one Republican congressman declared that Americans are tired of waiting.
In a press conference with other House GOP leaders on Wednesday, Republican minority whip and Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise took Harris to task over her job performance on the border — or lack thereof.
“Over 1,000% above capacity”
As seen in a video shared by Breitbart, Scalise spent his time at the podium comparing massive overcrowding problems at a Texas migrant detention center to the restrictions placed on private businesses amid COVID-19.
“Imagine a restaurant back home in any state in America. If you’re over 100% percent capacity with state guidelines, they’re going to probably shut that restaurant down,” he said, according to a transcript from Rev. “Here you’ve got the federal government running a facility with holding cells over 1,000% above capacity.”
Scalise went on: “Where the government would shut somebody down if they were doing this in the private industry, the federal government is doing this to these young kids. […] If you read Texas’ law on child abuse and neglect, what’s happening in that federal facility and [what] the Biden administration is running violates Texas’ own laws. It’s a national disgrace.”
That disgrace, in Scalise’s eyes, comes at the hands of Harris, who the congressman said “refuses to go down [to the border], maybe because she doesn’t want to be associated with this disgraceful policy.”
“But if she’s the vice president of United States, and the president put her in charge of this, Vice President Harris needs to go down to the border and see this for herself, because maybe she would then encourage President Biden to reverse his policies that have failed,” Scalise said, according to Rev.
“Cannot build enough capacity”
Of course, Scalise is far from the only Republican to criticize Harris over her reluctance to visit the border. Texas Sen. John Cornyn has also excoriated the vice president over her apparent apathy, telling Fox News that the federal government currently “cannot build enough capacity to keep up with the expected increase in flow of people coming across the border.”
Harris announced Wednesday that she’s planning a trip to Central America to help address the “root causes” of the migration crisis, but there’s no sign that she’ll soon be heading to the border.
According to the Washington Examiner, Harris said her trip, which is set to include stops in Guatemala and Mexico, will come “as soon as possible,” but she didn’t put a date on it.
